The Consensus Model that was developed in 2008 by APRN Consensus Work Group and the National Council of State Boards of Nursing APRN Advisory Committee (Doherty et al., 2021). The Consensus Model was developed to provide a uniform model for APRN Regulation and it defines APN standards through licensure, accreditation, certification and education (LACE) (Buck, 2021). In the model, it identifies four roles that are considered to be advanced practice nursing roles which include certified nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, certified registered nurse anesthetists and certified nurse midwives. Though the Consensus Model was developed in 2008, “it addresses inconsistent standards in APRN education, regulation and practice†(Doherty et al., 2021).
In the 1990s, programs to become nurse practitioners only focused on primary care. However, as nurse practitioners worked diligently with “acutely ill patients, acute NP programs were then developed†(Doherty et al., 2021). The programs that were developed were very limited and only few places offered the program. Due to the limited availability of the program, nurse practitioners had no choice but to enroll in primary care programs rather than acute care. With the help of the Consensus Model of 2008, those who have acquired the proper education for primary care, and are interested in acute care, NPs were required to return back to school and receive formal acute care education. After receiving acute care education, NPs were also required to “obtain certification as a condition of state licensure and maintenance of ongoing employment in their acute care rolesâ€. Having NPâ€s going back to school and further their education in a specific specialty such as acute care, benefits the patient in ways that they feel confident that their provider is well educated about their health concerns and will receive quality care from their provider.
The Consensus Model influences and benefits those who have APRN roles. It is very important that APRNs follow, participate and advocate for their profession as it gives them the ability to provide safe and quality care to patients. The Consensus Model aims to improve mobility and uniformity of APRNâ€s from one state to another.
