Effects of Advertising Presentation

** Note – Use of “research” from outside of this course – particularly web searches – does not fulfill the “course materials” requirement. Use our materials and cite them properly. **

Resources: Week 5 readings and videos

Choose a product or service from these examples:

  • Fast food
  • Class of consumer product
  • Personal care
  • Automobile

Research the Internet to analyze how that product or service has been advertised.

Prepare a 15- to 20-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation in which you investigate the role of advertising in a culture of consumerism. Be sure to discuss the following:

  • Who determines ethical standards for advertising? Draw upon and cite course material. (10 points)
  • In what ways has advertising affected American culture? Draw upon and cite course material. (10 points)
  • What are the key persuasive techniques used in consumer advertising? Illustrate with specific examples, explaining how each technique works. Draw upon and cite course material. (20 points)
  • Discuss some of the critical issues that may arise from the following areas. Draw upon and cite course material (20 points):
    • Children and advertising
    • Advertising in schools
    • Health and advertising
    • Political advertising
  • Find one example of a commercial that strikes you as particularly creative and appealing and address (20 points):
    • What are the elements that are unusual?
    • What is the target group of the commercial?
    • How does the commercial appeal to consumers?
    • Why do you believe this commercial to be effective in brand name recognition?
    • How are ethical standards met (or pushed to their limits)?
  • Illustrate your findings with specific examples.

Format your presentation appropriately – PowerPoint presentations should not be “walls of text.” Use proper aesthetics throughout:

  • (Web search “best practices in powerpoint design” if you need help)
  • Walls of text are a particular problem. If you have lots to say, put it in the speaker’s notes rather than writing it all out on a slide.
  • Each slide should have a relevant (and copyright-free) image.

Incorporate these guidelines:

  • Be sure to fully address each of the bullet points indicated above.
  • The purpose of your presentation is to demonstrate the application of the knowledge you have gained in this week’s materials by applying that knowledge to a real-world example. As such, it should engage heavily with course theory, materials, and language. Cite them where you use them.
  • Your presentation should include an appropriate introduction slide that previews your main points.
  • Your presentation should include an appropriate conclusion that slide that reviews your main points.
  • Your presentation should have proper mechanics including spelling, grammar, and appropriate use of APA citation style and references.
  • Special note on spelling: EACH error that a spellchecker would have caught will cost you an EXTRA 1% off of your possible points on the presentation. PROOFREAD AND SPELLCHECK.
  • Your presentation should be entirely your own original work, except where specifically indicated otherwise by the use of citations.
