Module 1 Discussion 1: Thesis Statementswatch TED talks and examine their thesis statements. You will create a working thesis for your own identity narrative essay and offer feedback to your peers on their working thesis statements.

You should spend approximately 2 hours on this assignment.

Instructions

  1. Begin by watching these four TED videos.
  2. Think: Choose one of the videos to consider. Find the thesis statement, and determine if it is effective. Does it follow the guidelines for an effective thesis statement, which you read about in the Exploration section? Why or why not? How does the speaker use the thesis to reveal something about their identity and also to drive the story? What works to make the thesis effective?
  3. Think: After you have spent some time analyzing the video and brainstorming for your own essay, create a working thesis for your identity narrative essay. Use your analysis of the example thesis statement to help you create an effective working thesis of your own.
  4. Write: In your initial post, identify the thesis of one of the videos. Discuss the effectiveness of the thesis statement for that video using some of the questions outlined above. Finally, include your thesis statement for your identity narrative essay. Be sure your thesis is clear and specific.
  5. Post one original post, and reply to at least two of your classmates. In your peer responses, give specific feedback and suggestions to your peers regarding their working thesis statements. Point out at least one thing you think they have done well, and ask questions or give advice to help improve it further.

Your assignment this week is to first choose an industry segment with which you are familiar. That business can be the one in which you are employed or are familiar with with such as: airline transportation; food services; retail outlets; pharmacies, medical or dental services; or any other business you are familiar with. Once you have decide on an industry segment (not a company), research online the following questions:

1.What factors are important to a high quality product or service in this industry segment?

2.What quality problems or issues has this industry had challenges with in the past?

3.How does this industry generally manage the quality of products and services?
